THE MARINE ADVANTAGE: Empowering coastal communities, safeguarding marine ecosystems, (IFAD, November 2017)
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is working to build the resilience of smallholder livelihoods and food security in coastal areas in the face of the threats outlined above. IFAD believes that in order to protect coastal communities and marine ecosystems, a holistic approach is needed. In concrete terms, this means that different combinations of approaches, including those outlined in this publication, are employed in different contexts. Such integrated systems also need to be sensitive to local conditions affecting rural people and receptive to local and traditional knowledge. In the current context, where the impact of climate change on the ecosystems and the natural resource base is dramatically increasing, adoption of location-specific integrated management of natural resources for higher productivity and better resilience to erratic climatic events is becoming even more crucial.
